How to Insert a Saw Blade in a Jeweler's Saw

It's been a while since I posted a tutorial. So, I've decided to go with something really basic . . . how to insert a saw blade in a jeweler's saw frame. I use a basic adjustable German-made, 4-inch (I think) saw frame with thumb screws. Here is an example from Monsterslayer (one of my favorite suppliers!). I find this type much easier to manage and is what I used in my metalsmithing class. They don't cost a lot, usually less than $15, not including shipping. Saw blades are relatively inexpensive, too. However, when you first start sawing metal, be prepared to break blades - buy extra!

First, you will need to make sure your saw blade is pointing in the right direction - teeth pointing down and out. You can run your finger against the blade to make sure you've got it right. Here is a quick video. . .

After you have the blade tightened in the top and bottom of the saw frame, make sure the thumb screws are tight. Once the blade is in tightly and in the correct position, push the back (adjustable part) of the saw frame with your thumb to increase the tension in the blade. At the same time, tighten the back thumb screw. To test if the blade is in tightly, pluck it like a guitar string. You should hear a high-pitched "ping" with no vibrations. Here is the second video. . .

Other tips:
* Use plenty of lube when sawing. I use beeswax that I bought at a local market.
* You may need to re-tighten the blade often throughout your project. Just push the back of the frame and tighten the thumb screw whenever the blade comes loose.
* When you first start using a jeweler's saw, be prepared to break a lot of blades. Make sure you have plenty on hand - blades are typically sold by the dozen, so this shouldn't be a huge problem!
* Here is a guide to figure out which saw blades work for different thicknesses of sheet or wire.

Good luck and happy sawing!
